Today a very close male friend was upset, said something about Nigerian women being very impolite, rude, the spawn of Satan or something along those lines. I being of women folk was quite perturbed. Began to wonder what my kin had done to incite such ill feelings and this was pretty much the discussion (give or take a couple graceful exaggerations):
*note VCMF=very close male friend
Me: Why so upset? Who is she? Gimme her name and home address lemme send my boys!
VCMF: Some random chic oh! I opened the door for her and she didn’t even say thank you.
Me: You don’t know her right?
VCMF: No!
Me: Did she ask you to get the door?
VCMF: No!
Me: Did you do it expecting some form of gratitude?
VCMF: NO!!!!!! It’s common courtesy for her to show appreciation!!!
VCMF sounded like he was about to have an aneurism so I said ok, and asked him to get on with work and not let the foolish woman (sorry unknown female) spoil his day. I said this to quell his annoyance. But this is what I was really thinking:
My guy, the chic didn’t ask you to get the door, she doesn’t know and therefore doesn’t owe you. If you felt like a gentleman and wanted to do the courteous thing it’s all on you. Don’t me mad ‘cause she didn’t crack a smile, mouth thank you, or get on the ground and bow to you: SHE DIDN’T ASK YOU TO OPEN THE DOOR FOR HER!!! She’s probably never had a guy open a can of coke let alone a door for her, how’s is she supposed to know that’s not something you spend the better part of your day doing? When a vehicle driver is trying to weave in front of me during traffic without indicating or making any hand gestures, it’s my prerogative to let him/her in, if I do and he/she doesn’t THANK me, I’m not going to go all ballistic on them (I do but for the sake of THIS argument let’s say I don’t). They didn’t hold a gun to my head, so why be upset if they’re unappreciative? They’re human and flawed! It’s in our design! Getting upset is to my detriment not theirs. Believe me, Common courtesy is very uncommon. Brush it off your shoulder: Thank you is just a word… not a get to heaven free card!
Nice! Courtesy does make the world go round though, but like U said people are human and flawed...Alot of us don't know any better!
ReplyDeleteToo bad, he wont open the door for women folk now...sigh. :)
